What is WUJUR?

WUJUR (the Washington University Journal of Undergraduate Research) is WashU’s premier student-run organization and peer-reviewed journal dedicated to student research and the discovery of knowledge, across all disciplines. We promote the appreciation of student research within the broader student body, while fostering excellence, passion, and curiosity. WUJUR publishes a semesterly journal, in print and online, with student works from all fields.

Who can submit to WUJUR?

Any current or former WashU student can submit to our journal. WUJUR welcomes research from all fields of study. This includes the arts and humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, and the social sciences.

What can I submit to WUJUR?

Undergraduate Research Works (Original Research)

We accept anywhere from the amount of material that you could fit in a poster presentation to a full paper. If you have presented a poster, you could adapt it into a written form and submit this. Even without a full paper, there are many ways for you to submit.

Review Articles (Reviews)

We accept a wide range of reviews, as long as the piece sufficiently and effectively conveys its intended message.

Features on WashU Students and Faculty (Features)

Features focus on the stories behind our researchers and students. They are largely written by our WUJUR Staff. However, if you would like to write your own feature, or you have any suggested researchers, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Prior Publication

WUJUR cannot accept a duplicate of work (i.e. a manuscript containing mostly identical data or analysis) that is already in review, in press, or published:

1) as a paper in another academic journal.
2) as an exclusive conference proceeding. These are conference-associated works that are published with exclusive copyright or reuse restrictions. This typically refers to conference papers. Does my work apply?Conference papers are often archived by national or international conferences and cannot be republished without permission. Most posters, even at the national and international level, do not fall under these restrictions and are eligible for submission. Likewise, oral presentations or talks are almost never considered prior publications unless formally recorded and archived with reuse restrictions.

All other work, including data from most posters previously presented at a national, international, or WashU-local conference, can be submitted to WUJUR.

Subsequent Publication

Work published in WUJUR may be published elsewhere. However, students and mentors should always be fully aware of other journal/organization’s policies concerning exclusivity and prior publication, and always keep WUJUR informed with other places where their work may be published. This responsibility lies with the student (and mentor) who is submitting the work, not WUJUR.

Solutions

Authors should make a best-informed decision before submitting their work. Authors interested in subsequent publication may decide to provide a preliminary or partial-data publication to WUJUR. They may also request that publication of their manuscript remain restricted to print, with only an abstract visible online. Finally, if need is demonstrated, an author will be able to withdraw their work from WUJUR archives post-publication. We are happy to provide additional guidance.

What happens after I submit my work?

After submission, the WUJUR Editorial Board will review your unedited work internally and consider the following:

  1. Does this work meet our standards of quality for academic research?
  2. Would this work meet our standards upon editing?
  3. Journalistic considerations (e.g. print space and budget)

If your work is provisionally accepted, it will then undergo 1-2 rounds of peer review by a selection of qualified WashU undergraduates and our Staff who have experience in a related field. This process is anonymous, confidential, and transparent. After full manuscript acceptance, we will collaborate with you closely to ensure the quality of the final publication. You will have the option to withdraw your work from publication at any time. Your work will be published in the Journal by the end of the semester.

WUJUR recognizes excellence, passion, and curiosity. Publication through WUJUR is an excellent way to officially share your own work with others. It provides valuable experience and a permanent publication, both online and in print. By publishing your work in WUJUR, you have the potential to inspire students, faculty, and those beyond our university, contributing to a rich history of undergraduate research here at WashU. You can find many other advantages:

  1. Open, transparent, and free
  2. Peer reviewed and confidential
  3. Simple submission and review process
  1. Retain all rights to your work and free to publish elsewhere
  2. Readership exceeding 1000 individuals
  3. Permanent articles with unique, visible DOIs

The Editorial Board will also award a Best Manuscript Prize once per edition. The winner will have the choice to be featured in the following edition and throughout our public platforms.
