About Us

WUJUR is the premier student-run organization and peer-reviewed journal at WashU dedicated to student research and the discovery of knowledge, across all disciplines. We promote the appreciation of student research within the broader student body, while fostering excellence, passion, and curiosity. 

WUJUR was founded in Spring 2024 with strong reception from students and faculty. We celebrated our first publication with great success in Spring 2025. Our team now exceeds 90 students. We continue to expand and look forward to many years of exciting work!

Cedric Bruges

Co-Founder, Editor-in-Chief

Cedric is a senior majoring in Biology and French. He does research in the DiPersio Lab on CAR-T and CAR-NK cell cancer immunotherapies and has received a Goldwater Scholarship for this work. He plans to pursue an MD/PhD at this intersection of oncology and immunology. Cedric also enjoys weightlifting, running, and everything related to astronomy.

Serina Cao

Managing Editor of Operations

Serina is a sophomore studying Biology, specializing in Neuroscience. She does research in the Newberry Lab at WashU Medicine, focusing on the role of neuro-immune interactions and the alterations in the gut microbiota on the Enteric Nervous System resulting in GI Motility disorders and disorders of the gut-brain axis (DGBIs). She also does research primarily over the summer at Stanford Medicine – Stanford Cancer Institute. She focuses on discovering new drug targets and developing new therapeutic strategies for cancer, specifically in Non Small Cell Lung Cancer, using chemical biology and functional genomics to discover novel anti-cancer mechanisms. Outside of the lab, Serina loves to travel, bake and cook yummy foods, color and draw, and spend time with family and friends.

Geneva Burkitt

Managing Editor of Content

Geneva is a sophomore majoring in Planetary Science and minoring in Geospatial Science. She is involved with research studying volcanic activity in the inner solar system and hopes to engage with research about outer solar system satellites in the future. She also has past research experience in iron formations, geothermal activity, and sustainable policy. In her free time, Geneva loves to paint, write, run, and get food with friends.

Lidiia Volkova

Managing Editor of Peer Review

Lidiia is a sophomore studying International Affairs with a minor in Spanish and French. She is on a Pre-Law track with aspirations to pursue International Law. Outside of WUJUR, she serves as the Community Engagement Chair for the WashU Questbridge chapter. In her free time, she enjoys going on coffee runs.

Mimi Zhou

Managing Editor of Production

Mimi is a sophomore majoring in Psychology and minoring in Linguistics and French. She is currently with the PsychLing lab to examine accented speech perception. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine and to further explore how humans acquire, perceive and encode language. Outside of her academic commitments, Mimi loves long walks, exploring new music, and is an avid soup enthusiast.

Leah Hulvershorn

Managing Editor of Design

Leah is a sophomore studying Biology and Communication Design. In the future, she hopes to work at the crossroads of design and biotech. Leah has research experience in ecology and microbiome studies, as well as experience as a graphic design intern at a medical device startup. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in nature, painting, throwing ceramics, and baking.

Kefan Cui

Managing Editor of Features

Kefan is a freshman studying Anthropology on the premed track. He has conducted research studying Osteogenesis Imperfecta and other rare genetic bone disorders using mouse and zebrafish models. In his free time, Kefan plays Club Tennis and loves making short-form documentaries.

Tali Jarmond

Director of Administration

Tali is a junior majoring in Ecology and Evolution with minors in History and Economics. He conducts neuroscience research in the Lee Lab, where he studies neuroplasticity and brain repair following stroke using imaging and behavioral approaches. He has also been involved in ecological research on freshwater fish populations with the Fishes of Texas Project. Outside of WUJUR, he serves as a PLTL Leader for Physics and competes on WashU’s Club Tennis team. In his free time, Tali enjoys watching movies, exercising, and listening to music.

Astrid Burns

Director of Alumni Affairs

Astrid is a junior studying American Culture Studies with minors in English and Legal Studies on the Pre-Law track. She is currently researching the commodification of feminism in the digital age as her Kling Fellowship project. She has previously been published for her research on the implementation of congressional gender quotas in the United States. Outside of WUJUR, she is involved in Student Life, KWUR, Sigma Tau Delta, and Beyond Boundaries and loves to spend her free time reading, being outside, and cooking new recipes with friends.

Nayeon Kim

Director of Professional Outreach

Nayeon is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, with a minor in Data Science for the Humanities. She has researched the use of intersectional language by Asian American women serving in the US Senate. Outside of WUJUR, she holds leadership positions in the WGSS Honor Society and CS40. For fun, Nayeon plays club volleyball and reads poetry.
